Honolulu Surfing Museum
2300 Kalakaua Avenue, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii
When Jimmy Buffet walked into the Santa Barbara Surfing Museum in California, he was so impressed by owner James Mahoney’s collection of surfing artifacts and memorabilia that the two decided to move a large part of the collection to downtown Waikiki. Thus, the Honolulu Surfing Museum was born, and it displays some of the coolest surf culture memorabilia to be found anywhere including the surfboard used in the film Apocalypse Now, an aluminum board authorized by Stan Lee (Marvel Comics legend and creator of the Silver Surfer), a large number of vintage surfboards, vintage Hawaiian musical instruments, and, amazingly, the gold ring worn by Captain James Cook when he landed on the Hawaiian Islands. After checking out the museum, make sure to stop in for an icy margarita at Jimmy Buffet’s Restaurant and Bar next door.
